Recap: Two weeks, two wins

In Week 1 it was tight end Seth Logan, but in Week 2 Greenville got a big day from running back Paul Garrett.

RPI's two weeks have resulted in two last-minute wins. Greenville followed up a surprise win with a second win of a completely different kind. Susquehanna moved to 2-0 but needed a few more periods to make it happen. All that and more happened in Week 2 of the 2021 Division III football season.

After a Week 1 win against Illinois Wesleyan, Franklin needed a little longer to put Rhodes away. The Lynx held the ball for more than 40 mnutes, but Franklin came away with the 36-29 win. The Grizzlies scored in the third quarter to tie the game at 29-29, and Franklin's kickoff landed in no-man's land and Franklin fell on it, then scored two plays later. The Lynx marched inside the 10 with less than a minute to go, but on fourth-and-goal, Charlie Moore broke up what would have been a Rhodes touchdown pass, sealing the win.

Delano Munoz Whatts caught a screen pass from George Marinopolous at the 4-yard line and scampered to the front left corner of the end zone with 33.6 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to lift RPI to a come-from-behind 14-10 victory over Stevenson. It's the second consecutive week in which RPI has won late. Trailing by three points with four minutes to play, RPI forced a Stevenson punt following a three-and-out and began its drive at its own 43-yard line. Marinopolous found Munoz Whatts on the right for a 4-yard gain and then hit D.J. Palmer on the left for 7 yards and a first down. A sack by Stevenson's Tashan Fitzgerald made it second-and 17 from the Stevenson 46-yard line, but Marinopolous and Munoz Whatts made up 8 yards on the next play. Pass plays of 9 and 14 yards, plus a roughing the passer penalty, set the Engineers up on the 12-yard line and RPI was in the end zone two plays later.

Chase Butterfield threw for four touchdowns and ran for another and Paul Garrett ran for 166 yards and two touchdowns as Greenville improved to 2-0 with a 57-42 win at Rockford. Garrett had both of his scores in the first half, the second with 28 seconds left in the second quarter to give the Panthers a 41-14 lead. The win spoiled a fine effort from Regents quarterback Jaelen Ray, who threw for 395 yards and five touchdowns.

The new overtime rules came into play in a big way as Susquehanna survived a five-overtime thriller to win 30-28 at Franklin & Marshall. The teams traded missed field goals in the first overtime, then made field goals in the second before each made their required two-point conversion attempt in the third and fourth extra period.

Moravian rallied from a 10-0 halftime deficit to tie the game on the final play of regulation and then post a 16-13 overtime win at Gettysburg. The Greyhounds started at their own 24-yard line, and Mills was sacked on the first play. Mills responded with completions to senior wide receiver Trevor Cunningham for 15, 10 and 10 yards, senior wide receiver Nick Petros for 22 yards and freshman wide receiver Jordan Lewis for 22 yards to move down the 6-yard line. After a penalty on the Bullets, Mills found Cunningham with a 3-yard touchdown pass on the final play of the fourth quarter. Yacuboski would split the uprights with the extra point to knot the game at 10-10 and force overtime. Gettysburg connected on a 36-yard field goal in its half of overtime, but Nate Boyle pounded it in on consecutive 1-yard runs from the 2 to give Moravian the win.

Hobart pitched a shutout and scored on seven of its final 10 possessions to score a 41-0 victory over Morrisville State. It's the Statesmen's first shutout since Oct. 7, 2017, when they blanked RPI 30-0. Hobart (2-0) used a balanced, swarming defense to corral the Mustangs (0-2). Only three Morrisville State drives advanced across midfield and none reached the red zone.

Wooster torched Kenyon's secondary for touchdown passes of 69, 55, 77, and 54 yards, and the Fighting Scots' defense contributed to the a 49-7 blowout victory with a pair of takeaways as the Scots improved to 2-0. Mateo Renteria completed 15 of 19 passes for 340 yards and three touchdowns in the win.

Logan Sawyer threw three touchdown passes and junior Joe Cox registered nine tackles as Nichols rallied from a 20-0 deficit to score a 27-23 win over Anna Maria. Sawyer shook off an early pick-six to throw for 213 yards – 78 of which went to Terrance Harris – and throw a 12-yard scoring strike to senior Hunter Ferreria, a 17-yard TD pass to Matt Mulroy, and a 22-yarder to Harris with 5:37 remaining that gave the Bison (2-0) their first lead of the afternoon. Joshua Pierre-Charles also scored from 2 yards out and finished with 85 yards on the ground.

Will Varney rushed for two touchdowns, including the game-winner with 2:03 to play at the University of Rochester defeated Alfred State 28-27. The win was sealed when Rochester's Jack Yensel intercepted a desperation pass from Aaron Jenkins in the final 22 seconds. Varney's winning TD run capped off a 15-play, 76-yard drive in the last seven minutes.
