Christopher Newport put out another dominant defensive performance, Berry picked off six passes, Carnegie Mellon improved to 5-0 and Lewis & Clark picked up a second consecutive win in Saturday's Division III football action.
Christopher Newport allowed just 67 yards of total offense and zero points as the Captains improved to 4-1 with a 30-0 win vs. Rowan. The Captains defense scored on an interception return by defensive end Mark Aanstoos and a safety, while Rowan was able to pick up just three first downs. K.J. Kearney was 27-for-37 passing for 206 yards and a touchdown. Three Rowan quarterbacks were a combined 10-for-17 for 92 yards.
Berry outscored Austin College 44-0 over the final two-plus quarters, picking off six passes in the process in defeating the Roos 44-10. Antonio White had a pair of interceptions, while Austin Haight had 130 yards combined on seven returns, one of them on defense. Berry improves to 5-0 for the first time in program history.
Carnegie Mellon improved to 5-0 for the first time since 2006 behind 10 catches and 122 yards receiving from John Prather in a 45-14 win at winless Bethany. Prather caught four touchdown passes in the victory, while Alex Kline threw five on the day for the Tartans.
Lewis & Clark has won consecutive games for the first time since 2012 and took the Wagon Wheel trophy from Willamette for the first time since 2000 as freshman Obed Eriza kicked a 33-yard field goal as time expired to lift the Pioneers to a 24-21 win. Out of timeouts, the Pioneers took over at their own 42-yard line with 55 seconds left, Sawyer May was 2-for-2 passing and ran twice for 21 yards to get to the Wilamette 16. Following a Bearcat timeout, Eriza nailed the 33-yard field goal to send Willamette away at 0-3.
Hobart and Ithaca combined to score 28 points in the fourth quarter and a freshman threw for 343 yards as Ithaca defeated Hobart 24-21. The Bombers are 2-2 overall, but 2-0 in Liberty League play. Senior Tristan Brown scored the game-winning touchdown on a 2-yard run with 42 seconds left in the fourth quarter.
Albright outscored King's 27-7 over the final 30:14, including the game-winning field goal with 58 seconds left to beat the Monarchs 34-31. Kevin Goetz converted a 32-yard field goal to send King's to defeat as the Monarchs had their fourth game of five this season decided in the final minute. The Lions improved to 4-1 on the season.
Otterbein improved to 4-1 and put last season's rivalry disappointment behind it as the Cardinals escaped Capital's Bernlohr stadium with a 49-42 win. Fred Hargrove sealed Otterbein's fifth win in six seasons against the Crusaders with an interception in the closing minutes.
Western New England overcame a two-touchdown deficit in the fourth quarter and went on to defeat St. Lawrence 27-24 in overtime. After being held to just 81 combined yards (75 passing, six rushing) and no touchdowns in the first half, senior quarterback Anthony Service led Western New England's second half comeback. Over the final 30 minutes of regulation and in overtime, Service accounted for 223 yards (105 rushing, 118 passing) and three scores.
Howard Payne snapped a 15-game losing streak, defeating Belhaven 45-37 on the road to win for the first time since 2015.
Emory & Henry got the ball on its own 21, down four, with 6:38 left in the game and the Wasps ran the seven-minute drill to perfection -- if there were such a thing. Brady Justice capped off a 17-play, 79-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run with 11 seconds left and the Wasps walked away winners, 45-42 vs. Washington & Lee. It was Justice's third touchdown of the day.
Juniata scored 20 points in the second quarter, but needed overtime, and a little razzle-dazzle at that, to win 42-41 at McDaniel. Spencer Wiersberg hit a 46-yard field goal to force overtime for the Green Terror and McDaniel scored first to take a 41-34 lead. But Juniata answered on its second play, as Austin Montgomery hit Matt Lehr for a 25-yard touchdown. And then, Jake Notestine took an option toss and threw back to Montgomery in the end zone for the two-point conversion and a 42-41 win.
