MINNEAPOLIS, MD –- The Johns Hopkins football team had a school-record eight players earn nine spots on the 2021 D3football.com All-Region 2 Team it was announced today.  In addition to the nine selections, Johns Hopkins also produced the Region 2 Defensive Player of the Year in sophomore defensive end Luke Schuermann.  The Blue Jays' nine selections were the second most in the region (Cortland-10).
 
Record-Breaking
The nine all-region selections for the Blue Jays this season breaks the previous record of six, which was originally set in 2011 and matched in both 2015 and 2018.  For clarity, prior to the 2021 season, there were four regions in Division III football and D3football.com selected an all-region team for each of the four.  Beginning with this season, the NCAA divided the nation into six regions for football, which reduced the number of teams in any one region.  Region 2 is comprised 41 programs representing the Centennial Conference, Empire 8, Liberty League, New Jersey Athletic Conference and Presidents' Athletic Conference.
 
Schuermann Stands Alone
Schuermann added to his already impressive haul of honors with his selection as the Region 2 Defensive Player of the Year while also grabbing First Team All-Region honors.  Among the 13 players named Offensive or Defensive Player of the Year in the six regions (one region had co-DPOY), Schuermann was the only sophomore and one of just three non-seniors.  He posted 46 tackles in his first season of college football after the 2020 season was canceled (COVID).  He counted 20.5 tackles for losses, 11 sacks, four forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and one pass breakup to his credit was well.  He is the first Johns Hopkins player to be named a D3football.com Offensive or Defensive Player of the Year.
 
Schuermann adds his all-region honors to an impressive haul of post-season accolades that already includes being named the Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Year, First Team All-Centennial and CoSIDA Academic All-District.
 
Kilbane, Woods Grab First Team Honors
Graduate student safety Macauley Kilbane and junior tackle JR Woods both joined Schuermann in earning First Team All-Region honors.
 
Kilbane is making his second appearance on the team after earning second team honors at cornerback in 2019.  He posted 53 tackles and added four interceptions, three fumble recoveries, one forced fumble and one pass breakup on the year.  He adds his all-region selection to his First Team All-Centennial and CoSIDA Academic All-District nods in 2021.
 
Woods made an immediate splash in his first season as a starter after the 2020 season was canceled.  He took over at right tackle and quickly established himself as one of the top linemen in the nation.  He helped lead the way for an offense that ranked among the national leaders throughout the year in scoring and total offense.  Johns Hopkins set a school record for points per game (46.5) and passing yards per game (346.8) and the Blue Jays' 39 touchdown passes tied the program's single-season record.  In addition, this was just the third time in school history that JHU has had more than 30 rushing touchdowns (32) and 35 passing touchdowns (39) in the same season.  Woods was previously a unanimous First Team All-Centennial Conference this season.
 
Wellmann, Revere Grab Second Team Honors at Wide Receiver, Wellmann Third Team Return Specialist
Johns Hopkins produced two of the seven wide receivers on the All-Region 2 Team as senior Harrison Wellmann and graduate student Quinn Revere both earned second team honors.
 
Wellmann led the team in receptions (85), receiving yards (1,252) and touchdown receptions (17) and was named First Team All-Centennial Conference for the second straight year.  His 17 TD receptions tied the school record and are currently tied for second in the nation, while his marks for receiving yards and receptions rank second and fourth, respectively, on JHU's single-season charts.  This is Wellmann's second appearance on the all-region team as he previously earned third team honors (2019).
 
In addition to his second team selection as a wide receiver, Wellman also grabbed third team honors as a return specialist.  He averaged 32.2 yards per kickoff return (12-387) with two returns for touchdowns.  Wellmann is just the second Johns Hopkins player to earn all-region honors at two different positions in the same season (Ben Scott (2006) / PK, P).
 
Revere, a Second Team All-Centennial selection this season, totaled 75 receptions for 1,163 yards and 11 touchdowns on the year.  He set a school record with four straight 100-yard receiving games to open the season and his marks rfor eceiving yards (5^th) and touchdown receptions (tied for 6^th) both rank in the top 10 on JHU's single-season charts.  In addition to his All-Centennial selection, he also grabbed CoSIDA Academic All-District honors this season.
 
Wolf, Stevens Round Out Offensive Selections
The five all-region selections for the Blue Jay offense were rounded out by junior running back Danny Wolf (2^nd Team) and junior quarterback Ryan Stevens (3^rd Team).
 
A First Team All-Centennial selection, Wolf led the Blue Jays in rushing with 900 yards and 18 touchdowns and added 16 receptions for 188 yards and one TD.  His 18 rushing touchdowns are the fourth-best single-season total in school history and he is the first Johns Hopkins running back to earn all-region honors since Stu Walters in 2015.
 
Stevens adds his all-region nod to his previous selection to the All-Centennial Conference Second Team.  In his first season as the Blue Jays' starter, he was 289-of-426 for 3,841 yards and 33 touchdowns against just nine interceptions.  His 33 TD passes are tied for third in school history, while 3,841 yards rank second.  He is the fifth Blue Jay quarterback to earn all-region honors since 2011.
 
Uggla Nabs Special Team Selection
For the first time in school history, Johns Hopkins landed a special teams selection on the all-region team as sophomore Spencer Uggla earned a spot on the third team as a special teams performer.  This spot is designated for a non-kicking, non-return specialist.  Uggla played in all 12 games and led the team with 16 special teams tackles on the year, 15 of which came on kickoffs, and he adds his all-region selection to his CoSIDA Academic All-District selection this season.
