BETHLEHEM, PA – The visiting Johns Hopkins football team scored twice on defense and twice on special teams and held host Moravian to a pair of field goals in a 54-6 win at Rocco Calvo Field Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Blue Jays' record to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the Centennial Conference, while the Greyhounds slip to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the Centennial. The win is the also the seventh straight for the Johns Hopkins dating back to late in the 2019 season.
The Blue Jays got a quick stop on defense to open the game and proceeded to march 92 yards on 13 plays and capped the drive with a one-yard Danny Wolf touchdown run on fourth and goal that gave Hopkins a 7-0 lead.
The seven-point lead held into the second quarter before the Greyhounds turned an interception and short field into a nine-play, 34-yard drive that they capped with a 25-yard Trevor Yacuboski field goal that trimmed the deficit to 7-3.
Johns Hopkins answered with two touchdowns in 90 seconds to quickly turn the four-point lead into an 18-point margin. The Blue Jays needed just 2:56 to go 70 yards after the Yacuboski field goal and Wolf again capped the drive, this time with a two-yard touchdown run.
After a kickoff out of bounds, the Greyhounds moved out near midfield on their ensuing possession, but on fourth-and-one from the Blue Jay 46, Johns Hopkins' Luke Schuermann sacked Chris Mills and forced a fumble that senior Nick DiFiore scooped up and raced 44 yards with for a touchdown to make it 21-3.
The Greyhounds methodically moved 56 yard in nine plays on their next possession before settling for a 28-yard Yacuboski field goal to make it 21-6, but that 15-point Blue Jay lead swelled to 22 just 12 seconds later as senior Harrison Wellmann returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown.
Moravian couldn't run out the remaining 3:13 of the first half and was forced to punt the ball back to Johns Hopkins, which needed just 50 seconds and eight plays to go 69 yards and junior Ryan Stevens hit Wolf with a perfectly executed screen pass that Wolf took in from 29 yards out to make it a 35-6 game at the half.
The Blue Jays added a 24-yard field from senior Kyle Battles in the third quarter and then added s safety, a 73-yard kickoff return for a score from Wellmann after the safety and a 14-yard fumble return from freshman PJ Penders to account for 16 fourth-quarter points and the 54-6 final score.
Wellmann's two kickoff returns for touchdowns are a school single-game record; coupled with the two defensive touchdowns and Wolf's three scores, this marks the first time since the 2018 season opener that Johns Hopkins has scored on offense, defense and special teams in the same game.
Stevens was 27-of-37 for 276 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Wolf's three TDs were one shy of the Johns Hopkins single-game record and he finished with 49 yards rushing and 35 receiving.
Quinn Revere led the Blue Jays with nine receptions for 107 yards and tied the Johns Hopkins record with his fourth consecutive 100-yard receiving game.
Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, October 2 when the Blue Jays welcome Franklin & Marshall to Homewood Field. Kickoff is set for 1 pm.
Notes: Wellmann now has three kickoff returns for touchdowns in his career and jumped from 10th to seventh in school history in career kickoff return yards as he now has 889. Wellmann also became the 14th player in school history to top 2,000 career receiving yards as his 72 today boost his career total to 2,036. The Blue Jays have scored 42 or more points in seven straight games and 50 or more in five of their last seven.
