DOVER, Del. – The seventh-ranked Wesley College football team registered a 43-7 win on Saturday over the William Paterson Pioneers in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) action to cruise to their third win in a row to start the season.
The return game was on display for Wesley as the team combined for 280 return yards. Corterris Simpson returned four punts for 129 yards. Simpson averaged 32.3 yards per return. Mike Brewer was able to capitalize on William Paterson's fake punt in the second quarter for a 69-yard pick-six. Marcellus Pack retuned the opening kickoff of the game 43 yards.
The Wesley defense pitched another shutout and held William Paterson to 43 yards of total offense. William Paterson recorded one offensive first down and didn't convert their 13 third-down or their two fourth-down opportunities. Of William Paterson's 13 offensive possessions, two lasted longer than four plays. Coray Williams paced the Wesley defense with a team-high six tackles. The defensive line tandem of Vincent Ebron, Cameron Miles and Nick Glover each tallied four tackles and a tackle for loss. Shawny'e Jones registered three tackles and 1.5 sacks.
On offense, Wesley was able to gain 447 yards of total offense with 23 first downs. The depth in the run game was showcased once again as 12 different Wolverines carried the ball in the win. E.J. Lee carried the ball 20 times for 79 yards. Abe Mansaray recorded 73 yards on three carries. Elijah Minter carried the ball eight times for 33 yards while Xavier Drummond picked up 28 yards on five carries.
Khaaliq Burroughs combined for four touchdowns on the day. He completed 14 of 20 passes for 203 yards and three touchdowns. Burroughs also converted a two-yard touchdown on a quarterback draw to open the scoring for Wesley. Nearly half of Burroughs' passing yards went to Alex Kemp. Kemp caught six passes for 101 yards and a touchdown. Ruhann Peele and Corterris Simpson also caught touchdown passes from Burroughs. Peele reeled in three passes for 43 yards while Simpson caught two passes for 31 yards.
The Wolverines (3-0, 2-0 NJAC) will hit the road next Saturday when they travel to Buena Vista, Va. to take on the Southern Virginia Knights for their first road contest of the 2018 season. Kickoff from Knights Field is set for 1 p.m.
