Erik Ieuter, an effective, championship-winning coach with a record of success and student achievement at every level, has been selected as the Fighting Muskies' next head football coach, Muskingum announced today. Ieuter will assume the role March 19.
"The response to our search for Muskingum's next head football coach was very strong, but ultimately Erik made a significant impression," said Muskingum president Susan Hasseler. "Erik is not only highly qualified from a technical standpoint, but he has also demonstrated a commitment to fostering and developing students and teams that achieve at the highest possible levels as athletes, students and leaders."
Ieuter spent the 2017 season in the Southeastern Conference at the University of Florida, working with the team's quarterbacks and making strategic offensive game day preparations. Prior to the 2017 season, Ieuter served 11 years at Division II Michigan Technological University, in Houghton, Michigan, first as wide receivers/special teams coordinator and most recently as offensive coordinator.
During his tenure there, Michigan Tech's offense finished among the top five in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in both total offense and rushing offense three times. Working closely with the team's quarterbacks and wide receivers, several of Ieuter's players reset several school records and received All-GLIAC honors. In 2012, the team won the GLIAC North championship and in 2014 made the NCAA playoffs.
"Erik's accomplishments are perhaps most effectively communicated through the successes of his teams and exceptional student-athletes. His championship-winning offenses are known for their consistency and discipline, and his players for their academic and athletic achievements," said incoming Muskingum athletic director Steve Brockelbank. "Erik is a very talented game day strategist and recruiter, and his demonstrated commitment to developing well-rounded individuals who succeed both on and off the field is closely aligned with ours. We are very pleased to welcome Erik to Muskingum."
A native of Midland, Michigan, Ieuter attended Albion, where he was a wide receiver and punt returner, helping to lead the Britons to two MIAA championships.
"My time as a Division III student-athlete provided some of the best experiences of my life, and I have dedicated my career to providing a similar experience for other young men and women ever since," said Ieuter. "The momentum behind Muskingum's commitment to student achievement and excellence is very exciting, and I am grateful to President Hasseler and AD Steve Brockelbank for giving me the opportunity to be a part of this important work."
Ieuter's collegiate coaching experience also includes a stint as a graduate assistant at Division II Grand Valley State, in Allendale, Michigan from 2004 to 2006, working with the team's wide receivers and offensive line. During his time there, Grand Valley State went undefeated in 2005 (13-0), winning the 2005 GLIAC championship and NCAA Division II national championship. He also served as a graduate assistant, working with the team's wide receivers, safeties and kick returners at Adams State, a Division II school in Alamosa, Colorado, from 2003-2004.
Ieuter holds a Bachelor of Arts in economics and management and English from Albion and Master of Arts in health and physical education from Adams State.
