MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The No. 14/14 ranked Wesley College football team took down the Montclair State Red Hawks, 26-7 on the road in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) contest on Saturday.
Wesley went into halftime trailing Montclair St. 7-3 after a Red Hawk scoring drive 55 seconds before the end of the first half. Wesley proceeded to score 23 unanswered points in the second half to overwhelm Montclair and seal the victory.
Wesley outgained Montclair 508-266 in a game that was scoreless until the late moments of the first half.
E.J. Lee tallied 20 carries for 157 yards and two fourth quarter touchdowns to push his 100-plus rushing yard streak to eight games.
Khaaliq Burroughs went 21-of-31 passing for 296 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions. Burroughs' favorite target on the day was Alex Kemp. Kemp caught seven passes for 122 yards. James Okike reeled in five catches of his own for 46 yards.
Samer Manna paced the Wesley defense with eight tackles and a half tackle for loss. Stefon Woodruff led the defensive line with two sacks and a quarterback hurry. Isaiah Ingram, Stephen Yorkman and Najee Wilson each added a sack for Wesley. Greg Taylor blocked a first quarter field goal attempt.
Nick Bruhn went 2-of-3 in field goal attempts and 2-of-2 in point-after tries.
Wesley cut the Montclair lead to a point in the third quarter when a Montclair unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on a punt and a 30-yard run by Lee led to a Bruhn 22-yard field goal.
A 34-yard punt return by Corterris Simpson at the end of the third quarter and two completions to Kemp put Wesley in the red zone early on the fourth quarter when Lee gave Wesley the lead on a nine-yard touchdown run. The two-point attempt failed but Wesley took a 12-7 with 13:45 to left in the game.
Wesley started to break the game open with 8:15 to go in the game when Burroughs found Dan Kesack on a skinny post for a 64-yard touchdown connection. Bruhn converts the extra point to give Wesley the 19-7 lead.
After the Wesley defense forced another Montclair punt, Lee busted off a 47-yard run to give Wesley added insurance in the waning moments of the game to clinch their seventh conference win of the year.
The Wolverines (7-1, 7-0 NJAC) will return home for a two-game homestand that will wrap up the 2017 regular season. The Wolverines will take on Route 13 rival Salisbury on Saturday in a top 25 battle of the two unbeaten teams in the NJAC. Kickoff is at noon.
