CHICAGO, Ill. - The Hendrix College football team defeated the University of Chicago 27-21 at Stagg Field in Southern Athletic Association action Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Warriors improve to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in SAA play, moving into second place alone. The Maroons fall to 5-2 and 4-2 in the league.
Hendrix jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the first quarter. At the 8:07 mark, junior quarterback Seth Peters hit sophomore Ben Luedtke for a 54-yard receiving score. Peters connected with junior Ethan Hoppe for a 14-yard pass with 1:27 left in the quarter.
Chicago opened the second quarter with a 43-yard strike from Burke Moser to Sam Coleman to make the game 13-7. Later in the second, Peters threw another 53-yard bomb to Luedtke, who was tackled at the Maroon three-yard line. Junior running back Dayton Winn punched it in on the next play to give the Warriors a 20-7 advantage, which was the score at halftime.
Chicago scored on a 20-yard flea flicker pass from tailback Chandler Carroll to Nathan Massey with 1:22 left in the third to cut the score to 20-14. With 13 seconds left in the quarter, Peters threw to Winn in the backfield and the tailback from Pea Ridge took it to the endzone 74 yards away. The pass was the longest in Hendrix history, giving the Warriors a 27-14 lead.
The Maroons scored on a nine-yard run by Carroll with 13:29 in the game. After Hendrix went three-and-out on the next possession, Chicago drove the ball to the Warrior four-line for a first and goal situation. After gaining one yard on the first down, Moser's second and third down passes were incomplete, setting up fourth and goal from the three. Carroll rushed the ball, but was stuffed at the goal line by junior Tyler Clifton and sophomore Jake Brantley, giving Hendrix the ball back with 8:15 to go.
The Warriors held on to the ball for the rest of the game, converting five first downs in the process, including a four-yard pass from Peters to Nate Hodapp on fourth and four with 1:02 left on the clock.
For the game, Hendrix ran 75 plays for 547 yards, an average of 7.3 per play. Chicago had 69 plays for 433 yards and a 6.3 average. Both teams converted 23 first downs.
Hendrix Notes
- Peters was 17-of-26 for 318 yards and three touchdowns. He set three game school records - 206.2 pass efficiency, 11.0 yards per play and 18.7 yards per completion. Peters now has 50 career touchdown passes.
- Winn rushed 33 times for 197 yards and a TD to go along with his 74-yard receiving touchdown. He also had 22 yards in returns, for 293 all-purpose yards - the third most in school history.
- Winn broke his own school records with 1,213 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground this season.
- Luedtke caught four passes for 124 yards, three yards off his career-high.
- Hodapp had six catches for 66 yards.
- Brantley came up with 10 tackles, an interception and 1.5 tackles for loss. He leads the Warriors with 10.5 tackles for loss this season.
- Clifton recorded seven tackles and a sack for five yards.
- Junior linebacker John Donald had eight tackles. Junior linebacker Ben Cunningham recorded six solo tackles and forced a fumble.
- Junior corner back Shaquille Grant also recorded six tackles.
- Junior defensive tackle Harrison Newton had a sack for two yards. He now has 10.5 career sacks and 3.5 in 2015.
- Freshman Chandler Marquardt picked up his first career interception
Chicago Notes
- Jackson Garrey led the Maroon defense with 15 tackles, two for a loss. Jeremy Vincent recorded nine tackles.
- Carroll, the SAA's second leading rusher behind Winn, was held to 73 yards on 23 carries.
- Moser was 22-of-41 for 343 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.
- Coleman caught eight passes for 166 yards.
- Syd Reynolds had six catches for 108 yards.
