Concordia-Moorhead wins in final minute

The 20th ranked Concordia-Moorhead College Cobbers converted a 30-yard field goal by junior kicker Brian Halverson with 24 seconds remaining to lift the Cobbers to a 21-20 win over fourth ranked Saint John's University at Clemens Stadium in Collegeville, Minn. Both teams entered the game unbeaten in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.
SJU got on the scoreboard with 3:52 left in the first quarter as sophomore wide receiver Kyle Gearman caught a 78-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Alex Kofoed. Senior kicker Brandon Keller's extra point failed and SJU led 6-0. The touchdown capped a 99-yard drive that took six plays and consumed 2:54.
Concordia scored its first points of the game with 14:10 remaining in the second quarter as Halverson connected on a 40-yard field goal to cut SJU\'s lead to 6-3. With 8:51 remaining in the half, Concordia collected a safety to pull within one point at 6-5 as sophomore running back Mike Lofboom was tackled in the end zone after a loss of three yards. The Cobbers took their first lead of the game with 4:24 remaining in the half as senior wide receiver Shawn Reile caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Brian Schumacher. The two-point conversion failed and Concordia led 11-6. The Johnnies came right back as senior Lee Clintsman took the ensuing kickoff and returned it 94 yards for a touchdown to make the halftime score 13-11 in favor of the Johnnies. The kickoff return by Clintsman was the third-longest in SJU history.
The only scoring of the third quarter came with 7:03 left as Clintsman caught a 32-yard touchdown pass from Kofoed and SJU opened up a 20-11 lead.
In the fourth quarter, Concordia scored with 10:38 remaining as senior fullback Ed Oehlers had a one-yard touchdown run to make the score 20-18 in favor of SJU. The touchdown ended a 10-play, 84-yard drive that took 4:50 off the clock. The game-winning drive took 75 yards in 14 plays and erased 6:19 on the clock to set up Halverson's game-winning 30-yard field goal.
Concordia had 345 yards total offense, compared to 309 for SJU. Concordia had 271 yards rushing on 71 attempts and 74 yards passing, while SJU had 249 yards passing and only 60 yards rushing. Both teams were ranked in the top four nationally in total defense and both quarterbacks were ranked in the top 15 nationally in pass efficiency. The Cobbers ran 89 plays, while SJU only ran 48 plays in the game. The time of possession was a staggering 40:58 to 19:02 in favor of the Cobbers. Concordia also had the advantage in first downs at 24-13. SJU committed two turnovers, compared to zero for Concordia and the Cobbers converted on 13-of-23 third-down conversions. 
Individually for Concordia, Schumacher rushed for 114 yards on 28 attempts and was 7-of-18 passing for 74 yards and one touchdown. Oehlers carried 25 times for 86 yards and one touchdown and senior running back Travis Christianson had 15 carries for 66 yards. Reile had four receptions for 33 yards and one touchdown. Senior wide receiver Andrew Passanante, who entered the game ranked in the top eight nationally with averages of eight catches and 124 yards receiving per game, was held to two catches for 19 yards. Halverson was 2-of-3 on field goals. Defensively, senior linebacker Josh Dietz had eight total tackles and senior linebacker Doug Runke collected seven solo tackles.
Individually for SJU, Kofoed was 16-of-32 passing for 249 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Lofboom had eight carries for 23 yards, while senior running back James Lehner and junior running back Corey Weber had 22 and 21 yards rushing, respectively. Senior tight end Isaac Flenner had eight catches for 70 yards, Clintsman had four catches for 63 yards and one touchdown and Gearman had two catches for 91 yards and one touchdown. Clintsman also had three kick returns for 129 yards and one touchdown. Defensively, junior defensive tackle Jason Good had 19 total tackles, three tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks.  Sophomore linebacker Jamie Steffensmeier had 16 total tackles and senior linebacker Paul Gans had 13 total tackles.
Concordia improves to 6-0 overall and 5-0 in the MIAC, while SJU falls to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in the MIAC. With three MIAC games remaining, Concordia now has the inside track on winning the MIAC Championship and securing the automatic bid into the NCAA playoffs.
The Johnnies lost their first MIAC game since Sept. 15, 2001, which was a conference record 28 straight wins.  Concordia defeated SJU for the first time since 1990 and for the first time in Collegeville since 1988.  The Johnnies were 11-0-2 against the Cobbers since 1990 before today's game. SJU lost at Clemens Stadium for only the 11th time in 104 games since 1987.  
Concordia will host Bethel next Saturday, Oct. 23, for a 1 p.m. kickoff in Moorhead, while SJU travels to Minneapolis next Saturday, Oct. 23, for a 1 p.m. kickoff at Augsburg.
