The Division III playoffs expanded from eight to 16 teams, but the extra round didn't stop Augustana from winning its third consecutive title, 20-7 against Ithaca.

Brad Price showed his stuff as he ran for 124 yards on 27 carries and the Vikings piled up 263 yards rushing on 73 attempts.

Shane McCormick scored the first touchdown on a 1-yard run on the first play of the second quarter that capped an epic 21-play, 87-yard drive. The extra point attempt was blocked. On the kickoff the Vikings forced a fumble from Bomber return man Pete Minturn that was recovered by Rusty Glendenning. On the next play quarterback Greg Wallace hit Eric Welgat for a 23 yard touchdown to make it 12-0.

Early in the fourth quarter Wallace scored from 5 yards out and then passed to Welgat for the two-point conversion.

Ithaca got on the board on a 22 yard pass from Mike Middaugh to Bill Lynch with 9:28 left on the game, but Kevin Cmiel and Mark Long had interceptions to kill the next two Ithaca drives and secure the victory for the Vikings. It was the 37th consecutive win dating to a 14-0 loss to West Georgia in the 1982 Stagg Bowl.
