Simpson blocked an extra point with 37 seconds left and the Storm's fourth-quarter rally held up in a 20-19 defeat of Wartburg on Saturday.
Brad Vogel had seven catches for 197 yards and a touchdown and Taylor Rogers added 136 yards and two scores on nine receptions as Simpson scored twice in the fourth quarter.
Greg Cordivari outdueled Nash Nance at quarterback as Catholic knocked off Hampden-Sydney 41-28. The Cardinals, who lost to Gallaudet earlier in the season, led the preseason Top 25 Hampden-Sydney 34-7 and 41-14 before the Tigers scored twice in 27 seconds in the final seven minutes of the game.
Hanover rallied from a 20-point fourth-quarter deficit to send its game against Rose-Hulman into overtime, then scored the game-winner on its first snap in the extra session to win 33-27. All three fourth-quarter scores came on drives of 70 yards or more and the winning score came on a 25-yard run by preseason All-America wide receiver Daniel Passafiume.
Geneva picked up its first win of the season in dramatic fashion, surviving a four-overtime thriller by defeating Thomas More 50-48. Quarterback Zack Hayward, who threw for 298 yards and ran for 56 more, got the deciding points on a two-point conversion in the final extra session. Thomas More, which has had a long string of playoff appearances, falls to 1-3, 0-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference. Zach Autenrieb tied the Division III interception record in the loss, picking off his 28th and 29th career passes.
Heidelberg continued its unbeaten run, though its defense is no longer unscathed. Marietta trailed 21-17 in the second quarter before the Berg pulled away to a 56-24 win. Ithaca remained unbeaten, possessing the ball for nearly 40 minutes in a 40-22 win against Utica. Salve Regina scored 26 points in the fourth quarter to pull away from Western New England 43-0 and remain unbeaten as well. Pacific cut Whitworth's lead to three with 2:25 left but the Pirates recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock to beat the Boxers 28-25 and improve to 5-0.
A.J. Jones caught touchdown passes of 26 and 45 yards in the fourth quarter, and Trinity (Conn.) held Williams to 39 yards rushing and 1 of 12 on third downs in winning a key NESCAC clash, 17-13. RPI's surprising early-season run took a U-turn as the Engineers lost at Merchant Marine 34-31. Alex Coviello ran for 135 yards and two touchdowns, while John-Leon Gosselin added 96 yards and three scores in the Mariners' victory.
Millsaps was outgained by Centre and had the same number of turnovers and penalties, yet won 33-16 to improve to 4-0. The Majors had seven sacks and held the ball for more than 41 minutes. DePauw freshman Justin Murray threw for 213 yards to 11 different receivers and rushed for a touchdown as the Tigers picked up their first win of the season with a 17-14 victory over Washington U. Dakota Lammy ran for 160 yards and two scores and Branden Downing caught a pair of touchdown passes as Illinois College ran away with a 56-20 win over visiting Lawrence.
Lucas Wainman hit a 53-yard field goal in the fourth quarter and Dan Dobson followed with a touchdown pass on the next drive as St. Olaf spoiled St. John's homecoming, 38-35. Stephen Asp caught seven passes for 144 yards, including the game-winning touchdown, one of the five Dobson threw. UW-Eau Claire, which has lost to two Top 15 teams plus the Johnnies, finally got in the win column by beating I-94 rival UW-Stout 21-13.
Alma, outscored 192-37 in its first four games, all losses, opened MIAA play by scoring three touchdowns in the second quarter and hanging on to beat Olivet, 20-14. It was Greg Pscodna's first win at the Scots' helm, and Olivet's ninth consecutive loss, its 44th in 46 games.
Stevenson, a second-year program which has lost three close games this season, got in the win column 35-7 against rookie program Misericordia. MIT rallied with two fourth-quarter touchdowns to beat Mass-Dartmouth 28-27, while Framingham State came back from a two-score deficit as well to beat Mass Maritime 35-28 in overtime. Greensboro defeated Methodist 34-33 to start a season 3-1 for the first time since 2003. Greensboro finished that season 3-7.
